Who is eligible to enter this contest?

All teachers k-12 are eligible to enter this contest. Building leaders can also submit on behalf of a teacher, but the teacher must be the subject of the video.

How do I enter the Formative Assessment Contest on Classroom Techniques?
To enter, visit dylanwiliamcenter.com/formative-assessment-contest and select “Enter your video.” Fill out the form and upload your video clip. You will receive a confirmation email for your entry.
When is the deadline for entering?

Submissions will be open on July 29, 2019 and will close on December 31, 2019 at midnight.

When are the winners notified?

All contestants will be notified on February 17, 2020 via email on whether they were selected as a winner. Winners must respond and claim their prize by March 1, 2020.

What does the winner receive?
1st place winner:

  • Free registration to the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National Conference OR a $200 gift card to the LSI Bookstore
  • Personal feedback from Dylan Wiliam
    • 1-hour Q and A with the affiliated school to be done virtually
  • Showcased at the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National conference

2nd and 3rd place winner:

  • $100 gift card for LSI online bookstore
  • Personal feedback from Dylan Wiliam
    • 30-minute Q and A with the affiliated school to be done virtually
  • Mention at the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National conference

4th through 10th winner:

  • $25 gift card for LSI online bookstore
How is the winner chosen?
Dylan Wiliam will select videos that effectively demonstrate classroom practice related to at least one of the five key strategies of formative assessment, and that would be most useful for those just beginning to develop their practice of classroom formative assessment.

Winner will demonstrate effectively one of the five Formative Assessment strategies:

  • Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning intentions and success criteria
  • Engineering productive discussion and activities that elicit evidence of learning
  • Providing feedback that moves learners forward
  • Activating students as learning resources for each other
  • Activating students as owners of their own learning
What are the video requirements?
  • The submitted video needs to be between 2 and 5 min in length
  • Only one video may be submitted per classroom (note: School may submit multiple videos on behalf of different classrooms, but can only submit one video per entry)
  • Video must contain clear audio and video
  • Video needs to contain live teaching in which the teacher demonstrates in his/her classroom 1 of the 5 Embedding Formative Assessment strategies outlined below:
    • Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning intentions and success criteria
    • Engineering productive discussion and activities that elicit evidence of learning
    • Providing feedback that moves learners forward
    • Activating students as learning resources for each other
    • Activating students as owners of their own learning
  • Video can be no larger than 500 MB
When will the winners receive the workshop with Dylan Wiliam?

First, second and third place winners will schedule their 30-minute or 1-hour virtual workshop with Dylan Wiliam between February 17, 2020 and March 31, 2020. Scheduling is subject to Dylan Wiliam’s availability.
