The Formative Assessment Contest on Classroom Techniques

Are you a formative assessment teacher? Do you have what it takes to win a chance to showcase your teaching AND your school at the upcoming 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National Conference?

Opening July 29, 2019 Dylan Wiliam is inviting teachers from all over the world who implement formative assessment in their schools/classrooms to submit a short video of a lesson demonstrating one of Dylan Wiliam’s five Formative Assessment strategies. All videos will be reviewed by Dylan Wiliam and personally selected for a prize winning.

First place winner will receive a free registration to the 2020 conference as well as the opportunity to showcase your work on stage with Dylan Wiliam himself. He or she will also win a chance to get personal feedback from Dylan Wiliam as well as a 1-hr Q and A session with Dylan and their associated schools. Rules and Regulations

Learning Sciences International organizes and sponsors promotions, giveaways, and contests awarding various prizes to participants. The promotions, giveaways, and contests are regulated by Contest Rules (hereinafter “Rules”). Participation in any of these contests constitutes the Participant’s agreement and acceptance of these Rules. All federal, state, local, municipal laws and regulations apply. Contest may be cancelled or withdrawn at any point in time.


This Contest is open to all K-12 educators who complete the entry form located on and who are 18 years of age or older as of the date of entry. Anyone can submit on behalf of a teacher, but the teacher must be the subject of the video. The Contest is void where prohibited by law. Employees of Learning Sciences International, Employees of Sponsor, and other companies associated with the promotion of the Contest, its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and suppliers, and immediate family members (spouse, parents, siblings, and children) and/or those living in the same household of Employees are not eligible to participate in the Contest. The Contest is subject to all federal, state, local, municipal laws and regulations.

Contest Period – start and end date

Entries will be accepted online starting on July 29, 2019, 12:00 AM EST and ending at December 31, 2019, 11:59 PM EST. Entries that are submitted before or after the Contest Period will be disqualified. Videos will be reviewed for judging by Dylan Wiliam and all winners will be announced and notified via email February 17, 2020. First, second and third place winners will receive feedback that will be scheduled between February 17, 2020 and March 31, 2020. Scheduling is subject to Dylan Wiliam’s availability.

Winning Criteria

All Participant’s videos will be individually Judged by Dylan Wiliam. Winners will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Dylan Wiliam will select videos that effectively demonstrate classroom practice related to at least one of the five key strategies of formative assessment, and that would be most useful for those just beginning to develop their practice of classroom formative assessment.”
  • Winner will demonstrate effectively one of the five Formative Assessment strategies:
    • Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning intentions and success criteria
    • Engineering productive discussion and activities that elicit evidence of learning
    • Providing feedback that moves learners forward
    • Activating students as learning resources for each other
    • Activating students as owners of their own learning

Web Entry Rules

Participants must accurately complete all the following required fields on the entry form located at or the entry will be characterized as incomplete and will not qualify:

  • First & Last name of teacher
  • Email address
  • Job Title
  • School
  • District
  • State
  • Which strategy are you using and showcasing in your video?
  • Add additional comments about your video (500 characters)
  • Are you the person featured in the video?

      • If not, name

The video must meet all Contest requirements to be eligible to win. Incomplete entries or the ones which are not in alignment with the rules, requirements, and specifications will be disqualified by Learning Sciences International. You may enter the Contest only once and you need to provide any information that might be necessary. Any attempt of circumvention of the rules will result in immediate disqualification from the Contest.

The video requirements are as follows:

  • The submitted video needs to be between 2 and 5 min in length
  • Only one video may be submitted per classroom (note: School may submit multiple videos on behalf of different classrooms, but can only submit one video per entry)
  • Video must contain clear audio and video
  • Video needs to contain live teaching in which the teacher demonstrates in his/her classroom 1 of the 5 Embedding Formative Assessment strategies outlined below:
    • Clarifying, sharing, and understanding learning intentions and success criteria
    • Engineering productive discussion and activities that elicit evidence of learning
    • Providing feedback that moves learners forward
    • Activating students as learning resources for each other
    • Activating students as owners of their own learning
  • Video can be no larger than 500 MB

** Please note that LSI will blur out student faces in all videos that are being showcased.

Original Content; Ownership

By participating in the Contest, each Participant guarantees that they are the exclusive owner of the copyright and all other proprietary rights in any and all materials and content submitted by the Participant to enter the Contest. The Participant further claims and guarantees that they have the right to grant to any third party the right to use, reproduce, distribute, perform and display any [photo, audio file, video, text, etc.]. All entries must have appropriate clearances, permissions and releases PRIOR to uploading, or may be eliminated from the Contest. Any unauthorized samples or performances of another artist’s material could be subject to fines, royalty fees, and/or legal action for which the Participant agrees to indemnify, defend and hold Learning Sciences International harmless. Learning Sciences International may use all submitted videos on-demand on Learning Sciences International’s or it’s affiliates’ websites

Rights Granted by Contest Participants

By entering this Contest and sending your video, the Participant understands and agrees that Learning Sciences International and/or anyone acting on behalf of Learning Sciences International has the right, where permitted by law, to use the content and personal information for any promotional purposes without limitation and without any further compensation, notice, review, or consent.

Disclaimer of Responsibility

Learning Sciences International is not responsible for problems with Contest entries, including but not limited to, entries which are lost, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete, illegible, or cannot be completed due to electronic or technical difficulties, even if the problem is the result of the sole or partial negligence of Learning Sciences International.


Winners of the Contest will receive prizes which are determined by Learning Sciences international. The prize cannot be redeemed for cash or substituted for another prize, and is non-transferable. Prize-related expenses including all federal, state, and local taxes represent the sole financial responsibility of the Winner. The prize is given with no written, express, or implied warranty. Any prize not claimed by April 15, 2020 will be forfeited by the winner and remain the property of Learning Sciences International. Acceptance of the prize gives Learning Sciences International permission to use the Winner’s personal details and video file for advertising purposes without further compensation, unless it is prohibited by law. Prizes are as follows:

  • 1st place winner:
    • Free registration to the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National Conference OR a $200 gift card to the LSI Bookstore
    • Personal feedback from Dylan Wiliam
      • 1-hour Q and A with the affiliated school to be done virtually
    • Showcased at the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National conference
  • 2nd and 3rd place winner:
    • $100 gift card for LSI online bookstore
    • Personal feedback from Dylan Wiliam
      • 30-minute Q and A with the affiliated school to be done virtually
    • Mention at the 2020 Dylan Wiliam Formative Assessment National conference
  • 4th through 10th winner:
    • $25 gift card for LSI online bookstore

Winner Selection and Notification

Winner will be selected by Dylan Wiliam under the supervision of Learning Sciences International. Winners will be informed by email on February 17, 2020. Winners must respond and claim their prize by March 1, 2020.  Learning Sciences is not responsible if the Winner fails to receive the notice about the prize due to any security settings or provision of incorrect contact information. If the Winner fails to respond within the required time period, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate Winner may be selected based on the judging criteria. Acceptance of the prize given in this Contest is in accordance with any and all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. If the Winner is disqualified for any reason, Learning Sciences International is not obliged to provide an alternate prize or extend the Contest Period in any way, and all privileges as Winner will be terminated immediately. Participants who provide false, fraudulent or deceptive entries or who engage in false, fraudulent or deceptive acts in connection with the Contest will be disqualified and subject to criminal prosecution.

How to Claim the Prize

All Winners who will receive an LSI gift card will be notified via email on February 17, 2020 and will have a gift card sent to their registered email address.

Terms & General Conditions

Learning Sciences International reserves the right to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest.

Limitation of Liability

By entering the Contest, you agree to release and hold harmless Learning Sciences International and its subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotion agencies, partners, representatives, agents, successors, assigns, employees, officers, and directors from any liability, illness, injury, death, loss, litigation, claim, or damage that may occur, directly or indirectly, whether caused by negligence or not, from:

(i) such entrant’s participation in the Contest and/or his/her acceptance, possession, use, or misuse of any prize or any portion thereof;

(ii) technical failures of any kind, including but not limited to the malfunction of any computer, cable, network, hardware, software, or other mechanical equipment;

(iii) the unavailability or inaccessibility of any transmissions, telephone, or Internet service;

(iv) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest;

(v) electronic or human error in the administration of the Contest or the processing of entries.

Disputes and Arbitration

THIS CONTEST IS GOVERNED BY THE LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND FLORIDA, WITHOUT RESPECT TO CONFLICT OF LAW DOCTRINES. As a condition of participating in this Contest, the participant agrees that any and all disputes that cannot be resolved between the parties, and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, exclusively before a court located in FLORIDA having jurisdiction.
